Researchers observed that water can increase blood pressure in individuals with impaired systems that normally maintain stable pressure. While healthy young adults may not see a noticeable rise, the study revealed that water stimulates the nervous system controlling vascular activity, preventing blood from pooling in the extremities. This finding aligns with previous work by the American Red Cross, showing that consuming roughly half a liter of water before donating blood can reduce the risk of fainting by about 20%.

David Robertson, Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology, and Neurology at Vanderbilt, explains: “What we discovered about water could help encourage people to donate blood again. If someone faints during donation, they are unlikely to return. Reducing the number of fainting incidents by 20% can significantly increase the pool of regular donors.”

Energy, Alertness, and Weight Management

Beyond blood pressure, hydration stimulates nervous system activity, indirectly increasing energy expenditure. Robertson notes that a simple practice like drinking three glasses of water daily could lead to a weight loss of about three kilograms in a year, without other lifestyle changes. While this alone isn’t a solution for obesity, it highlights how hydration subtly influences metabolic processes.
